CNSPY Academic Administration Panel Discussion
On Tuesday, April 11th, 2017, CNSPY hosted a panel discussion on careers in academic administration with Margaret Cartiera, Ph.D. (Investment and Innovation Director at CBIT), Michael Honsberger, Ph.D. (STEM Project Manager at Yale Young Global Scholars), and Dorottya Noble, Ph.D. (Associate Director, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Institute). The event was attended by 21 CNSPY members. For the event, the panelists were placed at three separate tables and the attendees switched between the tables to speak to each mentor.
During the discussion, the panelists shared their science background, their experiences transitioning into academic administration, information about their position, and tips on the job search and interview process. Academic administrators work as staff on campus to provide many of the support services that allow a university to function. Many positions in academic administration require multitasking and the ability to work on diverse projects at the same time, so administrators need to be flexible. These types of positions also require that you interact with many different people, so you may like academic administration if you are outgoing, open-minded, and easygoing. Additionally, networking can be very important for a job search in academic administration. Michael was able to find his current position at Yale Young Global Scholars through connections he made at two previous interviews.
