Opening & Closing Procedures

Library’s Opening & Closing Procedures for Book Monitors

The opening of both entrances is usually done by a library staff member, but in case you have to do it, just open the doors and match up the doors with the magnets against the wall.
The Reading Room doors are not alarmed.

The Level 2 doors are alarmed, but the left door is safe to open from the outside (the one in which the door knob turns) exactly at the time when the library is due to open
(8:00 am on weekdays, 10 am on weekends)

Opening Level 2:

• Door must be open from the outside (do not open it from the inside)
• Only one door opens (left side) the one in which the door handle turns, right when you hear a click from the door timer. (place the door stopper)
• Match up the door with the magnet on top so it stays open.
• Do not open the right door, otherwise the alarm is going to go off.
• If someone accidentally sets off the alarm, just call the YLS Security guard (2-8284), and he/she will call Kevin Rose, or whomever is on duty to re-set the alarm.
• If the left door closes accidentally, then you must take the elevator to Level 3, then take the stairs down to L2, so you can re-open it from the outside (remember, “do not open it from the inside”)
• Please let me know at the end of your shift, how many times did the alarm went off (just send me an email, or leave me a voice mail 2-7294)

Closing the Reading Room (RR)

– 10-15 minutes before 12:00 am turn off the lights in the RR (6 light switches are located to the left of the “Reference Desk.”)
– Go up to L5 & L4 and check all the carrels, let people know the library is closing.,
– Head down to the Reading Room and check the entire floor to make sure everyone is gone (including the Source Cite & Periodicals Room)
– Wait for the L2 student book monitor to come upstairs.
Both of you now leave together, and close the doors behind you (make sure they are shut)

Closing Level 2 (L2)

– Please close the L2 doors, 10-15 minutes before 12:00 am
– Place the barriers at the bottom of the staircase (make sure the “Do not Exit” signs are visible)
– Check the computer classroom, and if someone is there, then announce the “library is closing.”
– If no one is there, then turn off the lights (same with the open computer cluster) light switches are located next to the far right elevator.
– Head down to L1, check the Foreign & International Reading Room – the close carrels, and then turn off the lights if no one is there.
– Go to the Upper East Side, pass the fish tank area and then to the Mezzanine area, where the other close carrels are located – make sure no one is there.
– Go to the Lower East Side and check to make sure no one is there.
– Go back to Level 2 in case anyone was there when you started your rounds, and make sure they are gone. (If no one was there at the beginning, then continue to L3)
Go to L3 and meet up with the person closing L3, make sure everyone is out and then he/she will turn off all the lights in the Reading Room.
Both of you now leave together and close the doors behind you (make sure they are shut)
