Atlanta is home to many murals throughout its different neighborhoods and surrounding areas, but one fills me up with joy when I see it, and it’s this one. The mural is spray painted onto the side of one of the buildings in Little Five Points, which is an artsy area that people love to shop, eat, or just explore. The murals on the sides and backs of the buildings give the area a character and a flavor that matches the vibe of Atlanta, and this mural specifically encompasses that for me. The mural communicates the culture of the city in general as well as the area it’s in. The bright colors used catch the eye of the passersby while the presence of famous figures draws people in to look and see if they can guess who is who and if everyone shown in the mural is famous and if they know of them. Not focusing on the fact that the figures may be representative of famous people, they are a diverse group that represent the people who live in the city and frequent that area. They are symbolic of talent, individuality, and co-existence. The mural tends to be a great photo op for those who visit Little Five Points, and while people taking photos might rarely think of the implications the mural has, something draws them to that specific mural, and maybe those implications are why.
I love how you incorporate how passersby interact with the work into your description of the work. I was in Atlanta this summer and was in awe of all of its vivid street art—what a beautiful city! I wonder if I passed by this mural.
