About Us

ABOUT US: MECHA DE YALE

In 1969, a small group of Chican@s formed el Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan (MEChA) de Yale to foster stronger ties within the Yale Chican@ community. Over time, MEChA transformed from a predominantly Chican@ political group to a pan-Latin@ activist organization that advocates for social justice issues affecting underrepresented communities at Yale and in New Haven. MEChA de Yale spurs social justice initiatives on and off campus through demonstrations, community gatherings, educational lectures, and cultural events. MEChA promotes the ideals of a just, free, and educated society. The organization currently focuses on higher education for Latin@ students, wage theft issues in the New Haven community, and the East Coast Chican@ Student Forum, which MEChA de Yale hosted in April 2014.
