In December 2017, the Central Environmental Protection Inspector Group inspected Hainan and criticized Hainan “making money by ruining the ecology”, and especially criticized the Ocean Flower Island project for ecological damage. Under tremendous pressure, cities and counties in Hainan Province implemented “double suspension” policy, which means construction, sales and marketing suspension for undergoing real estate development project; Operation suspension for other hotel, catering, tourism, entertainment business. Under such circumstances, Ocean Flower Island had to stop developing.
In March 2018, after making a commitment to spend 300 million RMB to fix coral ecology in next three years, Evergrande was approved by the government to continue the development of the island.
