Stamford It’s People and Demographics:

Perhaps because of its proximity to New York and the coast in general, Stamford boasts an unusual diversity of citizens from different backgrounds, races, and places.

Stamford has a population around 127,000 making it the 219th largest city in the United States.

By and large the city is a young one. The median age is 36 which is about 10% lower than the state average. The education level of Stamford ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Stamford, 47% have at least a bachelor’s degree. By contrast, the typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree. In addition, Stamford is also pretty diverse when it comes to culture, race and ethnicity. 23% of the population speaks Spanish (58% of the population speaks only English).

Encouragingly, it’s a city that people move to (as opposed to from) in that most of its residents came from elsewhere. Only 36% of the people in Stamford were born in Connecticut, 28% were born out of state, and 33% were foreign born.

On both a per capita and median household basis, Stamford is relatively wealthy compared to the national average. This, however doesn’t mean that the city’s wealth is equally distributed. The income inequality of Stamford (Gini index) is 0.505 (higher than the national average) and men have an average income that is 1.44 times higher than the average income of females, which is $61,196.

When it comes to crime and safety, Connecticut historically has had a spotty. This reputation, while sticky, is perhaps somewhat unfair as reported crimes in Connecticut are currently at their lowest level since 1967. In fact, other states are increasingly looking to Connecticut as an example of smart policy reforms when it comes to effective law enforcement. While higher than Connecticut state averages, Stamford scores well below the national crime index. For its size and population, Stamford is a relatively safe city by local standards; both New Haven and Hartford report more crimes (relative to their populations) annually.
